The tremendous growth of urbanised space during the 21st century is dramatically visible in the landscapes of greater Mumbai. Housing shortage, environmental degradation, and governance failure are all unmistakable features of this growth. Architects have played a crucial activist and pedagogical role in making the contours of these crises visible, framing their causes, and offering ideas to government and citizens. These efforts take shape in a wave of architect-led activities and institutions that move beyond the traditional architectural studio model. Across South Asia, new institutional forms are evolving alongside hybrid practices involving designers, social thinkers, activists, and artists working collaboratively to analyse and propose new forms of spatial practice, geared to the greater collective good.
In this short three-day visit, co-hosted by the School of Environment and Architecture (SEA), Mumbai and the Sharjah Architecture Triennial (SAT) in the lead up to the Triennial’s third edition, we aim to explore, celebrate, and learn from the work of numerous innovative practices and institutions across South Asia. This conversation will be loosely framed around the themes of SAT’s third edition, titled Architecture Otherwise: Building Civic Infrastructure for Collective Futures. Our hope is to initiate a dialogue and an exchange between Sharjah and South Asia—one that will inform, and be a part of, the third edition’s effort to reclaim architecture as a civic practice rather than a purely technological one.
Curated by an anthropologist, this edition specifically highlights practices that centre people, rather than technologies, and reframes architecture as a social, ecological, and epistemological practice, rather than a purely aesthetic or infrastructural one.
We invite practitioners to share their engagements with the wider cultural landscape of arts, aesthetics, architecture, urbanism, economy, environment, society, and politics. The workshop hinges around the question: what have been the participants’ key learnings and realisations in the production of space, and how do they envision its evolution in the coming years?

يختزل عمران مومباي الكبرى مشاكل النمو الحضري الهائل خلال القرن الحادي والعشرين، حيث تبرز للعيان أزمات الإسكان والتدهور البيئي وإشكاليات الحوكمة. في خضم هذا المشهد، يضطلع المعماريون بدور ناشطي وتعليمي أساسي لإظهار ملامح هذه الأزمات وتأطير جوهرها وطرح الرؤى والمقترحات أمام الجهات الحكومية والمواطنين على حدٍ سواء. تنعكس هذه الجهود في بُنى وأنشطة مؤسسات جديدة يقودها معماريون يتجاوزون بنهجهم الحدود التقليدية لممارسات الاستوديو المعماري. فعلى امتداد جنوب آسيا، تتشكل صيغ مؤسسية جديدة بالتوازي مع ممارسات هجينة، تجمع بين المصممين والمفكرين الاجتماعيين والناشطين والفنانين، ضمن عمل تعاوني يحلل ويقترح أشكال جديدة لممارسة مكانية تستهدف خدمة الصالح الجمعي العام.
في هذه الزيارة القصيرة التي تمتد لثلاثة أيام، وبمشاركة كلية البيئة والعمارة في مومباي وترينالي الشارقة للعمارة تمهيداً للنسخة الثالثة من الترينالي، نتطلع إلى استكشاف الأعمال الرائدة للعديد من التجارب والمؤسسات في جنوب آسيا، والاحتفاء بها واستلهام الدروس منها. يستلهم هذا الحوار ثيمات النسخة الثالثة من الترينالي بعنوان "العمارة بشكل مختلف: بناء بنية مدنية لمستقبل جماعي". يحدونا الأمل في أن نؤسس لحوارٍ وتبادل مثمر بين الشارقة وجنوب آسيا، يسهم في إثراء مساعي النسخة الثالثة نحو إعادة النظر للعمارة باعتبارها ممارسة مدنية ومجتمعية، لا مجرد ممارسة تقنية.
تسلط هذه النسخة، التي تشرف عليها قيّمة متخصصة في الأنثروبولوجيا، الضوء بشكلٍ خاص على الممارسات التي تجعل من الإنسان محوراً لها بدلاً من التكنولوجيا، وتعيد تعريف العمارة بوصفها ممارسة اجتماعية وبيئية ومعرفية، تتجاوز كونها مجرد ممارسة جمالية أو بنية تحتية صرفة.
نوجه الدعوة للممارسين لمشاركة أشكال انخراطهم بالمشهد الثقافي الأوسع لممارسات الفنون والعمارة والعمران والاقتصاد والبيئة والاجتماع والسياسة. وتتمحور ورشة العمل هذه حول تساؤل جوهري: ما هي أبرز الدروس والمدارك التي اكتسبها المشاركون في سياق إنتاج المكان؟ وكيف يستشرفون تطور هذا المسار في السنوات المقبلة؟
