Thao Nguyen Phan
Trained as a painter, Thao Nguyen Phan is a multimedia artist whose practice encompasses video, painting, and installation. Drawing from literature, philosophy, and daily life, Phan observes ambiguous issues in social conventions and history. She has exhibited internationally, with previous solo and group exhibitions at Tate St Ives (2022); Venice Art Biennale (2022); Chisenhale Gallery (London, 2020); WIELS (Brussels, 2020), Rockbund Art Museum (Shanghai, 2019); Lyon Biennale (Lyon, 2019); Sharjah Biennial (Sharjah Art Foundation, 2019); and Dhaka Art Summit (2018), among others. Phan was shortlisted for the 2019 Hugo Boss Asia Art Award. In addition to her work as a multimedia artist, she is co-founder of the collective Art Labor, which explores cross disciplinary practices and develops art projects that benefit the local community. Expanding her ‘theatrical fields’ into performance gesture and moving images, she is a 2016-2017 Rolex Protégée, mentored by performance and video artist Joan Jonas.

ثاو نغوين فان فنانة متعددة الوسائط درست التشكيل وتتنوع أعمالها بين الفيديو والرسم والتجهيز. تستند في مرجعياتها إلى الأدب والفلسفة والحياة اليومية في رصدها للأوجه الملتبسة في الأعراف الاجتماعية والتاريخ. عُرضت أعمالها على في معارض فردية وجماعية دولية منها تيت سانت آيفز (2022) وبينالي البندقية للفنون (2022) وغاليري تشيزنهال بلندن (2020) وويلز ببروكسل (2020) ومتحف روكبوند للفنون بشنغهاي (2019) وبينالي ليون (2019) وبينالي الشارقة (2019) وقمة دكا للفنون (2018) وغيرها. كما ترشّحت لجائزة هوغو بوس للفن الآسيوي لعام 2019. وبالإضافة إلى عملها كفنانة متعددة الوسائط، فهي واحدة من مؤسّسي مجموعة "العمل الفني" التي تستكشف الممارسات متعددة التخصّصات وتطور المشاريع الفنية التي تعود بالنفع على المجتمع المحلي. عُينت كمتدربة روليكس 2016-2017 تحت إشراف فنانة الفيديو جوان جوناس حيث عملت على توسيع "آفاقها المسرحية" نحو الإيماء الأدائي والصور المتحركة.
